Breeders Cup 2024 is Finally Here

Before 1983, the U.S. thoroughbred horse racing industry used a subjective process to select its divisional champions. All of that changed in 1984 when the first Breeders Cup was run at Hollywood Park in Southern California.

Over the years, the number of Breeders Cup races has grown from 7 to 14. That has led to the Breeders Cup becoming a two-day event. Also, the Breeders Cup has evolved from an event intended for U.S.-based horses to a spectacular two days of horse racing that feature some of the best horses in the world.

The 2024 Breeders Cup is Here

Traditionally, the full slate of Breeders Cup races have been run at the start of the winter. Most of the time, these races have been held at major race tracks in Southern California to avoid weather concerns. This year's Breeders Cup will be the 42nd time this major event has been held. Of the first 41 scheduled events, 18 have been held at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, the now-defunct Hollywood Park, or Santa Anita Park.

Breeders Cup #42 will be held on November 1-2, 2024, at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. A total of $29,000,000 in purse money will be up for grabs over the 14 scheduled races. Here's a look at the conditions of all 14 races:

November 1, 2024 (Future Stars Day)

Race 6 at 2:45 PM PST: Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) at 6F for a purse of $1,000,000

Race 7 at 3:25 PM PST: Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at 1 1/16 miles for a purse of $2,000,000

Race 8 at 4:05 PM PST: Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) at 1 mile for a purse of $1,000,000

Race 9 at 4:45 PM PST: Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at 1 1/16 miles for a purse of $2,000,000

Race 10 at 5:25 PM PST: Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) at 1 mile for a purse of $1,000,000

Race 4 at 12:00 PM PST: Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) at 1 mile for a purse of $1,000,000

Race 5 at 12:41 PM PST: Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) at 6F for a purse of $1,000,000
