Heading into the holiday season, the COVID19 virus has made clear it is not done wreaking havoc on the U.S. economy and population. With the number of positive tests spiking all over the nation, a number of states are getting ready to head back into lockdown mode.
One of the common themes across the country is the desire state Governors have to lockdown places where large bodies of people congregate. Yes, that includes land-based casinos and retail bookmaking sites. While the effectiveness of prior lockdowns is questionable, there is a growing sense that something needs to be done as COVID19 creates a second wave of problems.
In Illinois and Michigan, land-based casinos have already been ordered to close. In Illinois, Gov. JB Pritzker has already announced casino doors closed on Nov. 20 with no reopen target date mentioned as of yet. Following suit, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has also announced the closing of the state's three commercial properties with a possible reopen date three weeks out. It's worth noting that Gov. Whitmer has no jurisdiction over the state's 21 tribal casinos, which have not announced any closings to date.
In America's retail casino capital of Nevada, Gov. Steve Sisolak has decided on a less extreme measure to combat the pandemic. Casino properties are permitted to operate at 25% capacity with a very strict mandate in place. The governor will be monitoring the situation before making any changes.
With similar actions likely in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the U.S. online casino industry figures to get yet another huge boost in business. Remember, the shutdowns from March through June produced record online gambling revenues for every state in the country where such activities were legal. Since then, several other states have legalized and implemented online casino gambling and or sports betting.
Where the online gambling numbers are expected to reach unparalleled levels is through online bookmakers. With the NCAA season coming to a close, the NFL closing in on the playoffs, and the NBA preparing to start its new season in mid-December, sports gamblers are expected to push the online sports betting handle through the roof to all-time records.
With even more online gambling activity coming from new customers, the tremendous potential of online gambling has not been lost on major online gambling providers. Company's like Twin River/Bally's, DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM are all making big moves to capture market share. They are all betting on the future of online gambling in America.
