There are signs of continued struggle when it comes to the amount of revenue that New Jersey has been able to generate from online poker. There was such hope and optimism when the state finally permitted legal online poker within their borders, but that has started to change. Many have stated that the fact that it did take New Jersey so long to allow for legal online poker in the first place was a big part of the problem.
Interest in poker in general has begun to fade among the public after the federal government cracked down on it in 2011 and many of the televised poker tournaments started to be cancelled as a result. This may have taken some of the air out of the balloon so to speak as far as any hope of online poker generating massive tax revenues for states.
The appetite for gambling in general is still very strong in New Jersey. Legal online gambling revenues were up about thirty-five percent year over year in terms of slots and other games like that. The only problem was that online poker is not holding up its end of the revenues so to speak.
The exact numbers show that online poker is down by some 14.5% while the remainder of gambling revenues are up about 30 percent year over year. Certain other games account for the remaining five percent. It is sad to see this particular game struggling when there is clearly interest in gambling in general. At the same time, we know that these things are cyclical, and this may just be a down time for poker as we know it. It could very well bounce back in the years to come and we may look at this as merely a time when it was not doing as well as it later will. It is hard to say with any certainty, but we know that for the time being there are some very disappointed people in the poker advocacy community. They have wanted to see stronger numbers to continue to make their case that this is something that needs to be legalized nation-wide.
