Sports Betting Bill Dies in Georgia

March 24, 2026

After lawmakers in the Georgia House of Representatives rejected House Resolution 450, the legalization of sports betting was put on hold for yet another year. Residents will have to wait another year to see if opponents can come together and get something done in the next legislative session. How likely is that to happen?

It's worth noting that the bill was defeated by a large majority, with only 63 votes in favor. Since the bill looks to amend the state constitution, it needs 120 votes before it could move on to the Senate.

Proponents were hoping to clear the House and Senate so that a referendum on sports betting could be added to the ballot during the midterms here in 2026.

With 98 lawmakers voting against the resolution, warnings from Rep. Al Williams proved valid. According to reports from Legal Sports Report, Williams stated:

“You don’t ask my input on anything. I think it’s absolutely foolish to expect support. He then added, “Nobody does that. A bill this important, you build a coalition.”

It's noteworthy that Williams carries a lot of weight within the online sports gambling industry. He currently serves as the president-elect of the National Council of Legislators from Gaming States.

It's a blow for sports betting enthusiasts in Georgia. The state is among a dwindling number of states that have yet to take a leap of faith into the sports betting arena.

The Pros and Cons of Approving Sports Betting in Georgia

The legalization of sports betting has been a hot topic in the Peach State over the past few years. Clearly, there are proponents and opponents on both sides of this issue.

The proponents are playing the lost tax revenue card. The reality is that Georgia residents are using offshore nd out-of-state wagering accounts to place their bets. There is a lot of potential tax revenue being lost that could certainly benefit state residents and prop up government coffers. In recent discussions, revenue could have been allocated to education initiatives like the HOPE Scholarship and pre-K programs.

On the con side, the usual complaints are being used. That includes concerns regarding a potential increase in statewide problem gambling issues. In the latest bill, they attempted to address this issue with the inclusion of consumer protections. Concerns were also expressed regarding disagreements about where tax revenue proceeds should be allocated.

A Different Approach May Be Needed

After HR 450's sound defeat, it may be time for state lawmakers to take a different approach if they want to get sports betting to the finish line.

The next legislative session will occur after the midterms. It's quite possible that a new group of representatives will be making decisions over the next couple of years.

As soon as the political landscape is settled, they can get back to work, looking for the compromises that are needed to bring sports betting to Georgia residents. It's a topic that will be drawing a lot of scrutiny until the issue is resolved.
